Artist Profile

The inclusion of Peter Stichbury’s work in Te Papa Tongarewa’s Art of the Nation in 2007, consolidated the credibility of a unique portrait artist who had won the prestigious Wallace Art Award the year he graduated.  Stichbury studied at the Elam School of Fine Arts (1994-1997), demonstrating an interest in portraiture that encompassed Lucien Freud and Jean Ingres.  His early paintings appropriated fashion photographs from magazines such as The Face with the artist overstating facial anatomy to the point of caricature and the subject of beauty itself being questioned (for example, chiselled features, glossy complexions and large eyes).

Since 2007 Stichbury’s art has been increasingly layered in narratives, reconciling French Neoclassical portraiture with the art of Walt Disney and the psychology and behaviour of his subjects apparent in the detail of their clothing, expressions and physicality.  Stichbury has work in Te Papa Tongarewa and the Wallace Art Collection.
